maintenance :: useful tips
Here are a few common problems that you may be able
to fix yourself. If you run into trouble, however, always give us
a call -
we are more than happy to help.
Garbage disposal jammed/not working:
- Turn power switch for disposal off
- Remove obvious debris (silverware, bottle caps, etc.)
- Press reset button on bottom of disposal - the button is located
on the bottom of the disposal unit which hangs under the sink.
- Run cold water and try to turn it on again
Toilet overflowing or clogged:
- Locate plunger (we supply one for each bathroom)
- Center rubber portion of plunger over toilet drain & push
- May require 3 or 4 plunges to clear drain
- Use towels to soak up any overflow - it may damage the ceiling

Ants or other pests:
- Place ant traps in areas where ants are seen
- Remember that pests are attracted to food, trash, etc. - try
to keep your apartment as clean as possible
No power in apartment:
- Be sure that you have called Niagara Mohawk for electric service
to be turned on - 1-800-932-0301
- Check the breaker panel (small 1ft.x 2ft. grey or painted door)
located inside your apartment - usually in a closet or behind
a door
- All switches inside breaker panel should be in "ON"
position
No heat in apartment:
- If you have gas heat, be sure that you have called Niagara
Mohawk and requested that the gas service be turned on. 1-800-932-0301
- If you have electric heat, check the thermostat in each room
to be sure they are set to desired temperature.
Locked out of your apartment:
- During regular business hours, come to our office and we will
let you in or supply you with another key temporarily.
- After hours lockouts require a call to our emergency # and result
in a $30.00 charge per incident.
